Storage Unit Rental Tips

When you've made the decision to rent a storage unit for the first time, the whole process can be confusing. You might be wondering where to start. Before you jump into your storage unit rental, there are a few things that you need to understand about your storage unit rental.

Consider Climate Control

In many cases, opting for a climate-controlled storage unit is the best investment. You need to be sure that you protect the items you're storing, and sometimes that is the best way to do it. If you don't choose a climate-controlled unit, you risk the changes in the temperature and humidity causing things to warp, mold, and deteriorate.

This is especially true for valuable things such as your photo albums, records, books, electronics, and more. Make sure that you take the steps necessary to keep all of your items protected from the environment by getting a unit with a consistent temperature and humidity level.

Know The Security Measures

When you put items in storage, it's natural to worry about their safety and security. Ask about the property security measures, the surveillance systems, and the unit access permissions. Ideally, look for a property that offers 24-hour access to the units, but has key code access to the storage gates.

If you can find a unit with onsite staff around the clock, that's often even better. Onsite security that's available at all hours can ensure that issues are addressed before there's a problem, and can help you feel more confident about leaving your belongings in the unit.

Review The Restrictions

Most every storage facility has a list of certain things that you cannot store on the property. Take time to review the rental contract and familiarize yourself with the restrictions for the property. In most cases, you cannot store chemicals of any kind, including paint, nor can you store vehicles or food. In most cases, these items are safety hazards. That's why they are prohibited from being stored in the units.

Ask About Support

Sometimes the storage facilities will offer added bonuses for those who rent new units. You may be able to get unloading help, or even access to a rental truck to help you move your belongings. However, some facilities don't think to mention these additional services, so always ask if there is anything additional included in your contract.

The more you understand, the easier it is to get just what you need from your storage unit. Contact a storage facility near you today for more information.
